Dry Creek Cafe

Scenes

I haven't been there in over ten years, and I don't even know if it's still open, or a McMansion has been built in it's place. Out on Mount Bonnell Road . . . you walk in, can buy a pickled egg out of a jar on the counter (they floated around in an ominous green liquid), then get your longneck beer and head to the deck upstairs. The old woman who owned the place would always yell at you, "Bring your damn bottles back down here when you're through with them!" Best sunsets in Austin, better than the Oasis, because it was just you and a few other people up there watching.

Update!!!

R.I.P Sarah

Thanks for maintaining a steadfast Austin tradition for so many years.

Dry Creek Saloon / Cafe

This was probably my favorite place during my tenure in Austin. The owner was a "very grumpy" "mature" woman named Sara. Yes, she would bitch at you to bring your bottles down from the upstairs sundeck and even had a few choice notes written on the upstairs juke box selection console. As you flipped through the song choices all at once you would find G1- "Bring you damn bottles back down I am too old to come up there and clean up after you." Just added to the overall flavor of the place. Great greasy hamburgers she made on a grill behind the bar. One of the most unbelievable fews and sunsets ever to be found anywhere "before the Oasis came along". Quite an eclectic mix of patrons everytime I was there. I have been in some killer dominoe games upstairs. I remember one fall as Christmas came on there were two large pickle jars on the bar. Each labeled with the names of Sara's grandchildren and a note urging you to donate towards Christmas gifts for the kids. Seems that Sara's daughter had run off to Australia w/ someone and left the kids at the Dry Creek w/ Sara. What a story those kids had to tell about growing up I am sure. Anyway, the pickle jars were full of money by the time Christmas rolled around. What a place at what a time, it is great to remember!

The Place for sure..

Yea, last I went was maybe 3 year ago. 2 old cats had been running it. Same decor upstairs. Now that you brought it up, I am going to make it out there soon.
Thanks,
