The Posse West

Bars

Well, strictly I guess it wasn't a bar in the traditional sense...

Posse West was a barely converted gas station at Rio Grande at 24th St that was pretty much a drive through beer store back in the early 70s.

I never had much to do with the beer side of things, but spent a lot of time with Papa Max Bachofen who used to live in one of the car repair bays, sort of a security guard for nights, I guess.

Max was a great old fellow, and my beekeeping mentor of the day. He used to also haul trailer loads of organges up from the Rio Grande Valley to sell - "Real navel oranges, not those painted harlots they sell everywhere else!"

Posse West

The Posse West can be spotted briefly in the Clash "Rock the Casbah" video.

Papa Max

And don't forget the great Uvalde honey that he sold there to, along with free advice. ;-)

Posse East

Don't forget about the east side! This also converted gas station is still open and still going.

Posse East / Prufrock's

Roger Pitts and I opened the Posse East in the early 70's. We both worked there for many years, as our friend and former frat brother David Peck opened the Posse organization. The inside bar area was called Prufrock's for a while (after The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock by T. S. Elliott).
Another affiliation that grew with the Posse East was the number of TEI bus drivers who also worked as beer pullers at the Posse (West and East)... great days and great friends...
