The Stallion

Restaurants

Make mine a double with a Shiner. The CFS was good (and cheap) but the Stallion was one of those places that you just wanted to go to. The waitresses stuck in 50's, the kitchen off to the side belching cooking smoke out that vent that you had to drive by, upstairs bar, it was funky but good. N. Lamar was an interesting neighborhood at that time... We've lost a lot of Austin history there.

the Dollar Chicken Fry

The steak was a breaded hamburger patty, the fries where cut in the house and the salad had french dressing. Sometimes it was hard to tell where the cream gravy stopped and salad dressing began. When I lived at 46th and Ave D I ate there about 3-4 times a week. I am sure any heart problems I have started at the Sallion.

The Stallion

Yes, the Stallion would be your lunch or dinner spot going or coming from Lake Travis. If I remember right very close to Koenig Lane aka RR2222. I think by the time I got there the CFS was up to a $1.25 but that was still one hell of a deal for a poor college kid. Great cream gravey, you could use it for wall paper glue if need be. Me and 3 roomates ate there at least 2 times every week.

Eat on a Budget

Man, I remember being able to get a single CFS, fries, and a small side salad for a $1. Even for the 70's, that was a deal for a starving student.

Remember

I think of the Stallion every day.

The Stallion

Took my parents there when they visited
Only $4.99 for chicken fried steak

Wasn't a fance place but great food
